EXT. DOWNTOWN CITY, CLOUDY - AFTERNOON

We open following a few feet behind a CRIMINAL being chased by the police, the camera follows overhead through the downtown alleyways and empty abandoned warehouses. A COP follows a running Criminal as he weaves through the creases between the buildings, over fences and around the occasional barking dog.

Jump cuts to new unidentified character, he’s running alongside the chase, unseen by the Cop or Criminal.

SOUND OF SIRENS AND POLICE YELLING

Police officer

Freeze!

The criminal turns a corner and now stuck in a dead end. The officer slows down to a cautious trot and aims his gun at the criminal. The Criminal turns to face the officer and slowly raises his hands.

Cuts to the unidentified character as they quietly scale over a fence and creep into the warehouse bordering the alley. Camera pans from floor level as the feet of the unidentified character approaches the scene. He arrives to a series of windows looking out into a dead end where the Cop is still slowly approaching the Criminal. Close up to the unidentified character’s face, we see C.C. for the first time, serious faced man in his late 20’s. Camera Cuts back to a side view of the officer with C.C. in the background windows.

The glass suddenly crashes as C.C. bursts through and tackles the Cop, disarming him. C.C. quickly kicks the gun away and takes off running with the other criminal.

C.C.

Hurry, let’s go.

The police officer is moaning on the ground holding his leg. C.C. and the Criminal take off around the corner into the distance and hop a fence. Camera zooms out slowly showing more cop cars and officers running to the dead end to help the hurt cop and look for the two criminals, now long gone as rain begins to fall.

EXT. ABANDONED FACTORY, NIGHT.

C.C. and RENO (the criminal) have escaped the police and have made their way to Frank Galliano’s docks. It’s raining heavily as C.C. leads and enters the building, Reno a few steps behind.

Reno

Shit man, that was too close! Yo, thanks for saving me back there, I owe you, for real.

C.C. is unresponsive, as if Reno isn’t there. C.C. just keeps his stride and his eyes staring blankly ahead.

Reno continues to follow behind C.C.

Reno

Jesus man I was spooked, I mean it was just supposed to be regular deal, ya know, everything was going like it always does, I mean- I mean- I don’t know what happened, all of a sudden there were blue lights everywhere, and then I just ran… I just ran. Man you really saved my ass back there, without you I’d be ridin shotgun with those pigs.

Reno glances back up at C.C. again, no response.

Reno

Yo Jack, you hear me? What’s wrong man?

As C.C. and Reno head up the stairs and pass empty room after empty room. Down a long hallway, sounds of voices are heard. A man shouting can be heard now.

Reno

Shit! Jack is that him?

C.C. and Reno enter the enormous factory floor. Dozens of empty barrels and parts of broken machinery surround a circle of men standing in the middle of the room. Reno begins to shy away has he walks closely behind C.C. As they approach, an older hefty man can be seen wailing on a man on the floor, a few men in obviously expensive tailored suits take a few steps back as the rest of the men dressed construction wear stand around in silence. The sound of punches hitting flesh is the only sound in the room. As the new visitors approach the circle, a large bearded man (MARIO, Frank’s #2 guy) taps the boss’s shoulder, bringing to his attention that they have arrived.

Frank Galliano

My Boy! Come!

Frank rises, a towel is given to him by Mario. He motions for C.C. to join him as he wipes the blood from his hands.

Frank

Come, come.

Frank bear hugs C.C.. C.C.’s head is well above Franks, his eyes draw towards the beaten body on the floor. The face is unrecognizable due to the  vicious  pounding, the body is slowly dragged away by some of the men in the room, as Frank reaches for C.C.’s head, pulls it down and kisses his forehead. C.C. steps to the left and turns to look out the windows. Rain is still falling.

Frank

Well, well.

Frank turns his attention to Reno

Frank

I heard about today… What happened?

Reno

Well Sir, um, you see, we were just doing our job.

Frank

Doing our job, huh?

Frank begins to circle around the frightened Reno.

Reno

Yes Sir, yes Sir, we were doing the deal, just shootin the shit ya know? And uh, and just out of nowhere the feds came, they were everywhere, I had to run.

Frank motions to Mario as he returns to face Reno. Mario now slowly makes his way behind Reno.

Camera cuts to close up C.C. and the rain falling.

GUNSHOT.

C.C. squints at the sound, Reno’s body slumps to the ground, a pool of blood surrounds his body. Frank looks at both Mario and C.C.

Frank

Jacky my boy! Thanks for bringing him here and Mario great shot! I love it when these things are so perfectly timed, don’t you?

C.C.’s attention still outside on the rain.

Frank

C’mon Mario, let’s get home. Jack, you go get some rest, you don’t look too well. I’ll see you tomorrow night. Remember, 8 O’clock sharp, and wear something nice, my family will be there.

C.C.

Yes Frank.

As Frank and Mario, and the nicely dressed men drive off, C.C. watches from the window. C.C. walks toward the exit, glancing at Reno’s dead body on the floor. C.C. clears his throat and motions to the two guards at the exit.

C.C.

Clean that up.

EXT. NIGHT - RAINING

C.C. is in his car racing down the highway.

INT. C.C.’S CAR. NIGHT

Close-up of his dashboard, the clock reads 2:04 AM. C.C. sits motionless, staring blankly ahead at the road. Suddenly he begins to hit the steering wheel furiously, flailing his arms around. His eyes begin to water.

EXT. OUTSKIRTS OF CITY, FOREST - NIGHT

A blacked out SUV sits in the middle of a small clearing in the forest. A man stands near the hood, arms crossed, leaning back on the car. C.C.’s car comes into view, the headlights swing and stop in front of the SUV. The man is now standing upright with his hands on his waist. His mustache now scrunched up against his nose caused by a large frown on his face. C.C. exits his car and sits on the hood opposite of SPECIAL AGENT EARL ROBERTSON.

Earl

Where the hell have you been son? And where’s Reno?

C.C.

He fucked up.

C.C. looks off, jaw clenched and arms crossed.

Earl

What do you mean he fucked up? This was on you kid. You know we need him, he is the key to all of this.

Earl takes a step forward.

C.C.

He screwed himself… greedy son of a bitch. He tried to make another deal, to pick up some extra cash but he was sloppy. The cops showed up. He wouldn’t have made it if I didn’t show up.

Earl

He didn’t make it though, did he?

C.C. doesn’t move

Earl

Who did it?

C.C.

Does it matter who!?

Earl

God dammit son! There is more at stake here. You know we need anyone we can get, witnesses, accomplices, I'll take any snitch you can dig up but you gotta keep them alive long enough for me to do my job.

C.C.

He got greedy. It wasn’t my fault.

Earl

This is why we need to be on the same page at all times. You can’t keep going on by yourself. I need you to report back more.

C.C. stands up abruptly, he points a finger at Earl and then back to the city lights in the distance.

C.C.

Don’t give me that shit, I’ve been this “Jack” character for long enough, I’m in, they trust me to get the job done but leaving to meet you in the middle of god knows where every other day so you can yank my leash a little tighter isn’t helping anyone. I can get this done.

Earl

Listen son you’ve held your own in there I’ll give you that but we need more. We’re not gonna take down the entire Galliano crime family if we can’t get anything that will stick. Reno was our best bet.

C.C.

I’m close, I’m close. Just a little longer, I know it.

Earl walks back to his car and opens the door, he pauses and turns back to C.C.

Earl

Don’t let me lose faith.

C.C. sits back on the hood of his car. In the background, Earl’s SUV drives off and disappears between the trees.

EXT. C.C.’S APARTMENT, DOWNTOWN, SUNNY MORNING.

A train rattles by C.C.’s window, waking him abruptly. C.C.’s watch rattles on the table from the shaking train, it reads 6:52 AM. C.C. turns over, still in bed, he sits up and mushes his face up and down. He slumps out of his bed and makes his way to the kitchen to find that he’s out of coffee. He stares out his window, looking out at the streets below, men dressed in the same suit all hurry for the train station, a few kids with backpacks skip by. C.C. begins to get dressed, moving around to avoid the empty to-go bags and scattered cloths. With only his jeans on now C.C. looks around for his shirt, there’s a large thundering knock at the door, C.C. quickly grabs a shirt dangling off the TV and steps to the door. As C.C. opens the door, Mario Torino, Frank’s right hand man pushes his way in.

Mario Torino

Morning.

C.C.

Great, (sighs) come on in.

C.C. gestures to the large man to come in. C.C. follows Mario in as he slowly moves his way into the apartment, eyeballing the corners. Searching for another visitor.

Mario

What are you up to?

C.C.

Just runnin out for coffee, You?

Both men glare at each other.

Mario

I was in the neighborhood, thought I’d check in on you.

C.C.

Oh yeah? You know many people in this neighborhood.

Mario

You’d be surprised.

C.C.

Wouldn’t we all like to be surprised by you.

C.C. chuckles sizing up Mario, he takes a step closer.

C.C.

Wanna join me? We could make it a date.

Mario

Ha. Jacky one of these days I’m gonna punch in those pretty teeth of yours. Listen, just sit and smile and don’t talk too much tonight, alright. You know how much I hate big mouths. These people you’re gonna meet mean a lot to him, don’t need you fuckin’ everything up from the get go.

C.C.

You know I might be part of the family someday cuz, you scared you might not be daddy’s favorite anymore?

Mario

What’d I say about big mouths?

C.C.

Even the boys love me, you better watch your-

Mario

Nah, hear me. You won’t be goin in there twisting people around  doing all your flashy shit, I see right through you. I know you.

The two men stare at each other.

Mario

You’re just some young punk. You think all this shit you’re pullin ain’t been done before. Kid I’ve seen hundreds of you. I got a hundred of you. Don’t think ‘cus that crazy old man likes ya that you’re some kind of special. Just tryna make a dollar and a name huh? But I ain’t standin for your shit. Ok? Ya heard me?

C.C.

I heard yo-

Mario

You better. We got too much at stake right now, just be on time tonight alright. I hope I made myself clear, for your sake.

Mario makes his way to the door.

Mario

You can go get your coffee now.

C.C.

Will do, wanna hold my hand and walk me down the stairs?

Mario

(sighs) Always yappin huh Jacky? We’ll see if you’re doin all that when those boys you speak of start choppin your limbs up for my dogs. Have a pleasant day Jack.

Mario walks out and slams the door. C.C. stands for a few seconds before he takes off his shirt, finds the original one he was looking for, grabs his coat and then walks out as well.

EXT. NICER PART OF TOWN- MORNING

C.C. has been walking the streets and we now join him on the corner of a busy intersection. He looks across the street and sees a new small cafe. C.C. strolls over avoiding passing cars and bikers.

INT. COFFEE SHOP.

The coffee shop is quiet and filled with a half dozen people. C.C. walks towards the register. A young woman, MYRA, with her back turned is fumbling around with the espresso machine, she mumbles to herself the repeated directions from the manual.

Myra

One, unscrew and remove the round black knob at the back of the machine. Two, place filter in container with long black handle. Three, remove brass rod from lower part of container. Four, screw-.

C.C.

Ahem…

She turns, surprised, she almost knocks the bag of coffee beans off the counter.

Myra

Oh Hi! Um yes what can I get y-

Myra’s eyes meet C.C.’s, she blushes and glances back down at the register.

C.C.

Hi… um could I get an espresso.

Myra

Ofcourse.

The two stare at each other for a moment smiling.

C.C.

Ummm.

Myra

Oh right! Ha! Comin right up.

Myra turns and begins to cautiously operate the machine. C.C. watches as Myra comes upon the black knob, she pulls unscrews it and holds it in her hand. She then removes the brass rod and holds it in her other hand, she pauses, then starts to look at the instructions on the counter nest to the machine.

C.C.

Need some help?

Myra

No. Um I got it…

There is a brief silence.

Myra

Actually I don’t know how to use this, and my manager barely explained how to do any of this. I don’t understand these french machines.

C.C.

Here let me help.

Myra

Wait, no you can’t come back here.

C.C. smiles and winks as he walks around the bar and pulls up the counter. Myra in disbelief, gets out of his way. The two slide past each other in the narrow passage of the bar.

C.C.

It’s alright no one will know.

C.C. takes the black knob and screws it back in place, locks the brass rod in the machine and pulls it down, the machine begins to make a strange sound. C.C. then pushes two buttons and turns a dial and coffee starts pouring into the cup.

Myra

Wow.

C.C.

Yeah I think you were reading how to build it. Thanks for the joe though.

C.C. turns and takes a sip. Myra looks down the re-read the instructions, as C.C. slips under the counter and continues out the door. Myra sits behind the counter, still lost in the encounter, she realizes he didn’t pay.

EXT. DOWNTOWN - EVENING

C.C. now dressed sharply in a navy suit and tie, steps down the packed sidewalks. C.C. stretches his arm out to check his watch. Shot of the watch reading 7:54. C.C. is six minutes early for dinner as he turns to enter a restaurant.

INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT

NOISES OF SILVERWARE AND MINDLESS CONVERSATION

Long Shot of a large table in the back of the restaurant where Frank, with his family sit. Pans slowly showing the rest of the restaurant filled with customers and busy waiters running around. C.C. walks through the panning frame as restaurant staff become aware of his presence and avoid crossing his path.

A short older gentleman with a large mustache greets C.C.

Owner

Jack! Great to see you! Frank and his family are in the back. Follow me.

The two make their way to the table. Frank stands as he sees them coming. Frank’s wife, brother, and two cousins, plus Mario and a few other body guards begin to rise to greet C.C.. The cousins are the first to greet him. TONY, the eccentric, and older Elvis Presley looking cousin hugs him right away. Then there’s ANGELO the more serious businessman type who has a tendency to grab hold of your hand and squeeze till you can’t shake his arm anymore.

Tony

Great to see you Jacky! It’s been too long. Here you must drink with us. It's a celebration!

Angelo

(Laughs)

Yes you must!

C.C. laughs and squeezes even tighter. As the men let go, C.C. salutes the bodyguards with a sly smile. Out of the corner of his eye he begins to notice a woman who had yet to get up, her back had been turned to him, she is in a red and black floral dress. The woman turns and stands, C.C. now realizes it’s Myra.

Myra now looking at the floor, hasn’t noticed it’s C.C. yet. She nervously fiddles her fingers on her side.

C.C. continues to shake the hands of those at the table, Frank introducing him as Jack, his man with a plan.

Frank

And finally Jack, this is my good for nothin’ daughter  who's too good for me, Myra.

Myra looks up at C.C., she recognizes him from their run-in earlier, she looks then to Frank and back at C.C., she reaches out her hand quickly.

Myra

Nice to meet you.

The two shake hands and Myra sits quickly. Frank and C.C. sit and join the rest of the table.

An hour or two passes, as the guests enjoy the meal and conversation, C.C. and Myra exchange quick glances. Frank tells a joke that makes all his guests laugh. C.C. leans to his right and whispers to Angelo.

C.C.

You got a light?

Angelo reaches into his suit pocket and hands a lighter as C.C. rises.

C.C.

Frank, may I be excused?

Frank

Yeah yeah, don’t be long. Now who wants a drink? Tony, what were we talkin bout?

C.C. stands and walks to the kitchen, he swings open the doors and passes by the cooks and dishwashers busy at work. They nod and he pushes open the back door looking out into the back alley and steps out.

Myra, still at the table, leans towards her mother.

Myra

Who was that?

Katherine Galliano

Who was who?

Myra

The man who just left.

Katherine

Oh that’s Jack, your father talks of him often.

Katherine nudges Myra and shows a sly grin.

Katherine

Dad’s “other” children.

The two share a little laugh.

Everyone has now finished dinner, the restaurant is mostly empty as Frank and his guests have moved to stand around the bar near the front entrance of the restaurant.

It is easy to see everyone has had a few drinks. Myra slips off to the kitchen unnoticed.

INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN

Myra walks past waiters rushing by and a clumsy dishwashers. The kitchen has at least twenty five workers all busy cleaning and closing up. Myra dodging and slipping her way through the kitchen stops in her tracks when she eyes C.C., now talking to one of the chefs.

C.C. talks in the chef’s ear. They laugh and shake hands. C.C. turns, and walks to the back exit and out the door. The door swings back but doesn’t close all the way. Myra quickly catches up but slows as she approaches the door. She gently pushes it open. Revealing C.C. standing in the alleyway alone smoking.

Myra takes a deep breath in and stands tall. She pushes the door open.

Myra

Mind if I join you?

C.C. surprised by the visitor turns quickly. His face changes to a smile.

C.C.

Yes, no, I don’t mind. Please.

Reaching out his hand out he motions for her to come down the steps. The camera rotates around the two as he gently takes her hand and helps her down into the alley.

Myra

Hi-

GUNSHOTS

C.C. and Myra turn back to the restaurant, screams and more gunshots can be heard coming from the front of the restaurant.

C.C

Frank!

Myra’s expression goes from blushing to fear.

Myra

Dad!?

C.C. brings Myra inside and directs her to stay in the kitchen. He makes eye contact with the chef he was taking with earlier and guides her to him.

Gunshots continue.

C.C.

Stay here. I’ll handle this.

C.C. pulls a gun from his lower back. He slowly pushes the kitchen door open. Frank is lying down with his wife holding his head off the ground. Blood is surrounding them. Angelo, Tony, and Mario, along with the rest of the bodyguards are slowly standing up, looking out at the two bullet filled cars and their occupants, at least seven masked gunmen, some have even spilled out onto the surrounding street lying in pools of blood.

C.C.

What happened?!

Tony

Those motherfuckers!

Angelo

We barely saw them. We were bout to leave but, but we couldn’t find Myra, or you… They came around the corner pretty fast. Next thing I know Frank’s on th- the on the floor.

Angelo looks over at Frank. A concerned look on his face.

Tony shakes his head.

Tony

There’s so much blood. Jack we gotta get him out of here.

C.C. still looking out the window, forgetting his undercover name.

Tony

Jack?!

C.C. snaps out of his focus and looks at both of them.

C.C.

I know a way.

Mario and the bodyguards exit the restaurant slowly with their guns steadily pointed at the cars.

Mario

There was a third car, they must have taken off. Fuckin’ punks!

Mario rallies the bodyguards as they all enter their vehicles to chase down phantom cars.

Angelo

No, they’ve surrounded us.

C.C. goes to check on Frank, he places his hand on the shoulder of a crying Katherine.

C.C.

I’ll be right back, ok Frank? You’re gonna be ok. I promise.

Frank has two deep gunshots on his upper chest and right shoulder, his eyes are calm, he reaches out his hand and touches C.C.’s arm. He nods, C.C. nods back.

C.C.

Tony, Angelo, hold this door. I’m gonna get us a way out of here.

Tony and Angelo nod back, C.C. with a determined look on his face, he rises, looks down at Frank, blood still coming out, he turns to the kitchen, pulls out his gun and rushes towards the back.

INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN - NIGHT

C.C. enters the kitchen gun pointed straight ahead. Myra, the chef, and what’s left of the staff that forgot to run at the sound of gunshots, those you didn’t run are all still huddled behind the counters. C.C. hears footsteps and chatter outside the back door, car doors open and close. He looks to the huddled staff and puts a finger to his mouth to quiet them. C.C. hits the light switch near him. The kitchen is almost pitch dark. The doorknob of the exit starts to rattle a little. The door slowly creeps open as three men cautiously walk through. They have black ski masks on and guns pointed straight ahead, they are walking in a row, making their way through the quiet kitchen. C.C. becomes visible behind the third man. C.C. is holding a large pan in his hand. He cracks the third man over the head startling the others who turn to around as C.C. darts behind a counter. C.C. grabs a knife and moves quietly around the counter. Both intruders are facing the back door, stepping over their knocked out accomplice. C.C. grabs the first man’s neck from behind and stabs his chest with a butcher's knife. The other man turns quickly to find C.C.’s fist inches from his face.

EXT. BACK ALLEY OF THE RESTAURANT

Four more men are waiting outside next to their car, C.C. explodes through the back door, disarming the first intruder before he can get a shot off. C.C. then pulls for his gun and shoots the intruders #2 and 3 on the left side of the car. C.C. quickly turns to the fourth intruder, who raises his unarmed hands and drops to his knees next to Intruder #1 who is now rubbing his head. C.C. stands over the two men.

C.C.

Who sent you?!

Intruder #1

Go fuck yourself!

C.C. looks down at Intruder #4 with a clenched jaw and an unflinching stare. C.C. shoots the Intruder #1 in the head, blood splatters over the Intruder #4.

C.C.

Again… who sent you?

The first intruder raises his hands, trembling as the rise.

Intruder #1

I’ll tell you! I’ll tell you! J- J- Just don’t shoot!

INT. RESTAURANT KITCHEN - NIGHT

Myra gets up slowly, the Chef directs her to the dining room. She pushes the door open. Tony and Angelo swing their guns in her direction.

Angelo

Myra!

Katherine turns her head quickly. Tony and Angelo lower their guns.

Katherine

Myra! Come! Quickly!

Myra sprints over collapsing over her father.

Myra

Dad! Dad! Are you ok? Please please, we’ll get you out of here.

Frank pulls her in for a hug as Myra begins to cry. Katherine puts a hand on her back and wipes a tear away.

EXT. BACK ALLEY

C.C. is still standing over the intruder #4.

Intruder #4

Ok, ok, I told you, now please let me g-

C.C. shoots him. Blood splatters over his leg. C.C. reaches in his pockets for the keys to the car.

INT. RESTAURANT DINING ROOM

C.C. joins Frank, Myra, Katherine, Tony and Angelo.

C.C.

Everyone to the back! Tony, Angelo, there’s a car parked outside of the alley. Lead them there. Here’s the keys, I’ve got Frank.

Tony and Angelo grab Myra and Katherine as C.C. picks up Frank and carries him. They make their way into the kitchen. C.C. nods to the Chef to get the staff to follow them out. They creep out to the alley. Tony stops to make sure it’s clear. Tony opens the back door and Angelo makes his way to the car. Myra and Katherine jump in the back. Angelo hops in the driver's seat. Tony and C.C. lift Frank into the back with his family. The chef instructs his staff around the corner and away from the street.

Chef

Jack I don’t know how to thank you.

C.C.

Don’t worry about it, just get your people out of here. I’ll see you soon.

The two hug and C.C. turns back to Tony.

C.C.

Tony get in, Frank’s gotta get out of here.

Tony

But what about these guys? Who were they? We gotta rip their fucking heads off!

C.C.

I don’t know, they were all cold before I could get anything out of them. Frank is more important right now, we need to get him help.

Tony hops in the passenger seat.

Tony

We gotta kill them all.

Angelo

Kill them all.

INT. HOSPITAL - SUNRISE

Shot of the TV in the lobby. The news is on, showing video of police at the scene of the restaurant with chalk outlines and yellow tape everywhere.

News Anchor

Police arrived on the scene late last night. Calls of heavy gunfire came in last night around 11 pm. Although police didn’t arrive till after the shots had stopped. Seven men were found dead outside the restaurant, three more in the kitchen and four more in the alleyway behind the restaurant. Totalling fourteen deaths. Some  bodies seem to have been dragged off or taken away, making the total death toll a mystery, police have suspected the number to be hovering around twenty but aren’t very sure. Police have zero suspects in all of this chaos but believe the suspected target of this attack was infamous mob boss Frank Galliano. Frank has been under investigation for multiple serious crimes though police have never been able to convict the man himself.

FLASHBACK:

INT. HIGH-RISE APARTMENT - MORNING

Three children sit scattered about the living room floor, the tv stand is placed before the window overlooking the city. DEBORAH, Frank’s half cousin, mid 30s, was put in charge of taking care of Frank’s children; FRANK JR. 17, Myra 14, WILLIAM 13, and DAVID 9. Myra, William, and David circle the TV, Frank Jr. stands in the kitchen.

News Anchor

Again if you’re just joining us, we are here outside the courthouse where Frank Galliano, suspected of bribery, money laundering, and the murder of two federal agents is on the stand for the fifth day. A verdict is on the horizon and the days of the Galliano family are numbered-

The screen quickly turns off.

DEBORAH

Hey! Turn that off! Y’all don’t need to be watching that.

Myra

Everyone’s gonna be talking about it anyways.

William and David look down. Deborah puts her hands on her hips while still gripping the remote. Myra stands, her long brown hair covers her face, she turns quickly and stomps up the few carpeted steps that separate the living room and kitchen. She passes Frank Jr. as the two share a look, then she exits down the hall.

Deborah

Ugh that girl. I just don't understand her.

Frank Jr.

Alright boys, get washed up it’s time for bed.
